As we close out 2025, we want to update you on our progress and call for your collaboration – we want to build Cornerstone as an active open source community, and that requires all of you.

As a reminder, our goal for 2026 is to release a single open, global MRIO model, built on the best of USEEIO and CEDA, that can offer a durable common standard for companies, governments, and researchers. 

Our progress in 2025 and where we would love your input:

• We released two data updates: Open CEDA 2025 and the 2025 USEEIO Supply Chain Emission factors. These incorporate the latest global GHG and economic data into the two underlying Cornerstone models as we progress on the merger. The updates showed a 2% median decrease in emissions per dollar spent in the last year.
• We defined our technical architecture. [seeking feedback] We are refreshing the code architecture supporting USEEIO and CEDA for the combined model. We wrote a draft technical vision. We are open for public comment through Github issues or pull requests until Feb. 1st, 2026. In the meantime we have started implementation in our bedrock GitHub repository.
• We identified the main methodological difference between USEEIO and CEDA US and began the reconciliation. [seeking feedback] We catalogued the key issues in our methods repository, where we’re also storing the quantitative analyses to support our decisions. We are open for public comment through Github issues or pull requests until Feb. 1st, 2026
• We adopted our data pipeline license. We wanted a simple, permissive license that allows free commercial and non-commercial use, with attribution for the resulting datasets. Existing licenses do not quite cover this situation, so we drafted a simple new agreement in collaboration with Heather Meeker, a global expert in open licenses.
• We began building collaborations across the community. We are reaching out to companies, governments, and organizations to broaden the reach of Cornerstone.
